An IMF-EU bailout team arrived in the Irish capital Dublin Wednesday to review whether
the Government is sticking to the terms of the €85bn programme of aid. Under discussion
is the progress of public sector reform and changes to wage-setting systems for low
earners. Lydia O’Kane spoke to Director of Social Justice Ireland, Father Sean
Healy who says that despite government initiatives, the lack of opportunities is leading
people to leave the country to find work. “We are actually experiencing substantial
emigration out of Ireland, net emigration, that means more people emigrating than
are coming into the country.”
Father Healy adds that government initiative
are still not on the scale needed to deal with the current unemployment situation.
