(July 02, 2011) The council of Cardinals responsible for the management and expenditure
of the Holy See, met on Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st July,
presided over by Cardinal Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone. The Statement of Accounts
of the Holy See for the fiscal year 2010 was presented under three headings: The
Statement of Accounts of the Holy See, The Statement of Accounts of the Governership
of the Vatican State, and Peter’s Pence. The Holy See Statement of Accounts for the
year 2010 registered a slight gain of € 9.848.124, which is commendable in the face
of the international economic crisis in vigour. This gain is in continuity with the
2009 gain which had covered the deficit of 2008. The main expenses were for the running
of the various dicasteries and bodies of the Holy See, that support the Pope’s pastoral
care of the universal church. As oif the 31st December 2010 the number
of employees of the Holy See amounted to a total of 2.806 persons as against the 2.762
of 2009. The governorship of Vatican State registered a gain of €21.043,000, thanks
mainly to the visitors of the Vatican Museums; this was positive compared to the crisis
in the international world of tourism. The Vatican State independent of contributions
of the Holy See or other institutions, has managed its own affairs, taking care of
the patrimony of the Church, which is the precious historical artistic patrimony of
the world. Peter’s Pence registered a deficit. The total amount received for 2010
is USD 67.704.4661, 41. This money is mainly used by the Holy See to help in situations
of emergency and calamity. It must be noted that Canon 1271 of the church's law code
says that "according to the resources of their dioceses, bishops are to assist in
procuring those means which the Apostolic See needs ... to offer service properly
to the universal church." This contribution also registered a deficit as compared
to 2009
