(June 20,2011) More than 80 young Catholic students from nearly 60 countries are
currently in India to discuss their role in dealing with social issues plaguing the
world such as environmental concerns, violence and human trafficking. They are part
of the International Young Catholic Students (IYCS) Formation Session and 14th World
Council being held in the capital New Delhi, June 16-27. While showcasing their different
cultures, the students are discussing the theme: Crisis and Conflict in the World
— Students Offering Hope. “We have a great responsibility in building a better world.
We should offer new hope and a new perspective for a new world,” said the IYCS secretary-general
from Togo, Edouard Koutsava at a colourful opening of the 12-day event on Thursday.
The Young Catholic Students’ Asia coordinator, Reyna Clemena Deloso from the Philippines,
said such programs will help create awareness among the youth. She said they would
be discussing issues like the environment, drugs, and violence, and also share their
experiences. Ines Maria, a participant from Spain, said the discussions would help
her understand many world problems. Father James Nanbak, from Nigeria, said such events
will help change society as youths from different countries will understand each other’s
culture better. Indian Member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha, the chief guest,
urged participants to create a society where there is no discrimination or corruption.
