India tests nuclear-capable missile

India successfully test-fired a short-range nuclear-capable missile today. The surface-to-surface Prithvi missile has a range of 220 miles and is capable of carrying a warhead of between 1,100 and 2,200 pounds. It is already in use by the Indian army. India is developing a range of other weapons, including a supersonic missile, designed jointly with Russia.

The spokesman for the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, Fr. Babu Joseph told Vatican Radio he understands the complexities and difficulties of the regional and global political situation, saying he believes the government is seeking to strengthen its defence capability. Earlier this week, a report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said India and Pakistan have added 20-30 nuclear warheads apiece to their arsenals in the past year. Speaking to Vatican Radio, Fr. Joseph reiterated the Indian bishops’ firm opposition to nuclear proliferation. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947, including two over control of the Himalayan region of Kashmir, which remains in dispute.
