In Libya, NATO warplanes attacked the capital of Tripoli on Wednesday night after
thousands of troops loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi advanced on and shelled
the rebel-held western city of Misrata.
NATO defence ministers met in Brussels
yesterday, but there were few signs of willingness to intensify their Libya mission.
The alliance has called for the international community to help Libya establish a
new form of government, saying Gaddafi's days in power are coming to an end.

focus on what one U.S. official called the "end-game" for the Libyan leader.
