Domestic workers' rights in focus at International Labour Conference
The 100th session of the International Labour Conference opened in Geneva on Wednesday.
The 17-day meeting brings together government delegates to discuss issues such as
modern-day slavery, the protection of domestic workers and migrant workers’ rights.
Caritas
Internationalis has been advocating for legal rights for domestic migrant workers,
and is calling on the Conference to adopt the “Decent work for domestic workers” Convention
and Recommendation.
“In many countries we see that migrants are taking this
occupation as domestic workers,” says Martina Liebsch, Policy Director at Caritas
Internationalis. “We have seen … that there is a lot of exploitation of migrants --
trafficking of migrants into domestic work.”
Caritas will be participating
in a side event on 3-4 June alongside its partner organisations at the Geneva Ecumenical
Centre.
