As many as 40 thousand people have fled the Abyei region of Sudan after the north
occupied the disputed territory, sparking concerns over a new refugee and humanitarian
crisis in the already devastated country. International monitoring groups are saying
North Sudan's occupation of the contested oil-rich Abyei region was 'pre-meditated
and well-planned.' Looting and burning has been reported across the region, and Northern
President Omar al-Bashir has refused to withdraw his troops.
