(May 11, 2011) The Catholic Church’s Caritas Internationalis will mark the 60th
anniversary of its foundation in a very special way. The Caritas Express train
will bring passengers from Vatican City to the central Italian town of Orvieto
on May 21. The railroad border between Italy and the Vatican will be opened for this
unique trip, which aims to raise public awareness of the aid agency's work and collect
funds for its humanitarian projects. The journey will end in Orvieto, famous for the
Corporal of Bolsena -- a Eucharistic miracle housed in the town’s cathedral, where
Caritas' 19th General Assembly will be held from May 22-27. The train will return
in the evening on the same day to Rome's main Terminus Station. The historic trip
is expected to gain public attention worldwide due to its humanitarian goals and its
novelty.Taking part in the project are Vatican City and the Italian railroad Ferrovie
dello Stato (FS), which is making staff and trains available for free to collect funds.
