Queues are forming along the main thoroughfare leading to St Peter’s, to access the
basilica and pray before the mortal remains of Blessed John Paul II. The basilica
will remain open until all those wishing to do so have had the opportunity to pray
before the coffin of the late Pope.
Police and Vatican personnel are calling
on pilgrims to remain patient, advising that while the lines are orderly and moving,
they may have to wait for some hours before gaining access to the Basilica.
Civil
defense and Red Cross volunteers are on hand to supply water and first aid to those
in need at various points along Via della Conciliazione and in front of Castel Sant’Angelo.
For
pilgrims looking to leave the area of St Peter’s we have the following travel advice:
For pilgrims heading to Rome city centre – Termini Station, you can access
shuttle buses by exiting Via della Conciliazione on your left hand side (facing St
Peter’s). Walk towards the Tiber river and the bus stops are located in front of Santo
Spirito hospital on Mazzini Bridge.
To access the subway Metro A Line at Ottaviano
and Lepanto, use the exits from Via della Conciliazione on your right hand side facing
St Peter’s basilica.
Those pilgrims who need to reach the Olympic Stadium bus
park, can do so by exiting Via della Conciliazion on their right hand side facing
the basilica, and by making their way to Viale Angelico, where shuttle buses are waiting
to take them to their destination.
