An English perspective


Among the Catholic Church leaders here in Rome for the beatification is Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, today the head of the bishops conference of England and Wales. Back in October 1978, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected to the papacy, he was a young priest in the archdiocese of Liverpool – Philippa Hitchen asked him for his memories of that historic moment and his assessment of Pope John Paul’s influence on the Church in Britain today.
