(April 29, 2011) The Vatican department that oversees the causes of beatification
and canonization says that it continues to receive reports from all over the world
of miracles and favours received through the intercession of Pope John Paul II.
Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints
said that even though the cause of Pope John Paul had been put on a fast track, the
process has been pursued with great attention and accurate scrutiny. He said that
the great media attention give to the personality of the late pope could not allow
his case to be treated superficially. Cardinal Amato said that the process that they
followed is the one that the late Pope himself had issued in his 1983 document. A
miracle is needed for beatification, by which a person is declared Blessed. Another
such miracle after beatification is needed for the person to be declared a Saint at
canonization. Cardinal Amato said that it depends on Msgr. Slawomir Oder, postulator
or promoter for the sainthood cause of Pope John Paul to exercise discernment and
examine with the help of doctors and scientists which miracle could be taken into
consideration for his sainthood.
