(April 25, 2011) The Catholic bishops of Sri Lanka have issued an Easter message
reminding their faithful of their Christian responsibility to help overcome the difficulties
and problems of the past for a better future of all in the country. “We need to
be conscious of our responsibility as Christians to help our nation to pass from
a state of instability and difficulties caused by the past conflicts, different natural
disasters and the difficulties of the poor who are afflicted by the high cost of living,
to Passover to better conditions in life,” said the bishops. The message was signed
by the president of Sri Lanka’s Catholic bishops, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop
of Colombo and secretary-general Bishop Norbert Andradi of Anuraradhapura. The Church
leaders said Catholics need to ensure the cause of peace and harmony and true reconciliation
as well as rehabilitation of every one either displaced or affected by the recent
natural calamities. They called on them not only to pray but also to be more committed
to rebuilding the nation on the basis of justice inter-racial and religious harmony.
