Santo Domingo International Book Fair to honour Holy See
(April 08, 2011) The leading book fair of the Caribbean held annually in Santo Domingo,
the Dominican Republic, will honour the Holy See as a special guest this year. The
XIV International Book Fair of Santo Domingo is scheduled from May 4-24 in the grounds
of the Plaza de Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte in the capital. The Dominican minister
of culture, José Rafael Lantigua explained that that the fair is honouring the Holy
See because of the 500th anniversary this year of the establishment of
the country’s dioceses of Santo Domingo and La Vega. This year’s book fair is being
dedicated to Msgr. Francis J. Arnaiz and Father José Luis Sáez, two leading Jesuit
figures who have made significant contribution to the cultural and social life of
the Dominican society. Monsignor Arnaiz is an author and scholar of social phenomena
and Fr. José Luis Sáez is the most important Catholic writer in the history of the
Dominican church, and author of various works in the field of historical research.
This year’s Santo Domingo International Book Fair will have a special Youth Short
Story Award and a Youth Poetry Award.
