Libyan rebels in retreat from pro-Gaddafi force

Libyan rebels today retreated from the superior firepower and tactics of Muammar Gaddafi's troops after gains made earlier in the week. The towns of Nawfaliyah, Bin Jawad and Ras Lanuf have now fallen in quick succession to a lightning government counter-strike.

Yesterday at an conference in London 40 governments and international bodies agreed to press on with a NATO-led aerial bombardment of Libyan forces.

US President Obama has also not ruled out the possibility of army the rebels.

Lydia O’Kane spoke to Stijn Van Bever from the disarmament Office of Pax Christi International about the way the campaign is going.

He says “The original idea of the intervention was the protection of civilians…but now it seems to be going into some kind of war situation.”

He adds that Pax Christi is concerned that this turn of events will evolve into a longer campaign in Libya like those of Afghanistan and Iraq. Listen here RealAudioMP3
