Muslims torch Christian houses In Bangladesh


(March 08, 2011) Seven houses were burnt and several people badly injured after a group of Muslims attacked a Christian village in northwestern Bangladesh on Monday. A group of Muslims quarrelled with predominantly Catholic Christian villagers in Banglagar of Dinajpur diocese over land disputes and later attacked poor villagers with sticks and sharp weapons, setting their homes on fire. Severn wer badly hurt. Father Anthony Sen, parish priest of Thakurgaon parish, said the culprits fled after they called the police. Father Sen, secretary of diocesan justice and peace commission visited the victims and gave them rice and blankets. A case has been filed against the perpetrators, with legal assistance from the diocese and local Caritas wing. Local police visited the village and assured the victims of compensation and punitive measures against the culprits after proper investigation. However, several villagers said they fear further attacks might take place.
