As protestors in Libya continue their revolt against the rule of Moammar Gadhafi,
Arabs from around the region are wondering what the future will bring – including
in the Holy Land.
“They are thinking about their moment in time to follow this
[movment] which started in North Africa,” says the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad
Twal.
“What will happen after?” he asks. “If they are looking for more freedom
and more democracy, it is [good], but if somebody else can monopolize this change,
these manifestations – that is something that could be good, could be bad. We don’t
know.”
He questions the role the international community is now playing in
response to the series of popular revolts.
He asked, “Why, before now, did
nobody pronounce these words? Why is this a political business, and not about ethics
or morality?”
