(February 02,2011) And now before the news, here is a brief comment on Pope Benedict
XVI’s missionary prayer intention for the month of February - that Christian communities
may witness to the presence of Christ in serving those who suffer from disease in
those mission territories, where the fight against disease is most urgent. As
the Catholic Church annually observes the World Day of the Sick on February 11th,
Pope Benedict asks us to pray this month particularly for the care of those, who
suffer from disease in mission territories. The reason why the fight against disease
is most urgent in mission territories is because they are often located in undeveloped
parts of the world and are very poor, and extreme poverty always brings much illness
and disease. Children especially are the worst hit. Stating that Jesus has particular
love for all the sick and the suffering, the Pope urges Christian communities to
bring Christ to those who suffer. He says whatever we do the poor and the sick, we
do unto Jesus. Let us pray that we too, may serve the suffering, even at the price
of pain to ourselves.
