Pope to mark New Year’s Day, World Day of Peace with feast of the Mother of God
(December 31, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI will usher in the New Year 2011 with a solemn
Eucharistic Celebration in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Saturday morning, marking
the feast of the Mother of God. New Year’s Day is also observed as the World Day
of Peace in the Catholic Church, with Jan. 1st, 2011 being its 44th
edition since Pope Paul VI began the tradition in 1968. Every year the Pope releases
in advance a message for this annual day, and Pope Benedict XVI’s message for 2011
World Day of Peace is “Religious Freedom, The Path To Peace.” At midday on New Year’s
Day the Holy Father will also address the faithful and recite the Marian “Angelus”
prayer.
