UN General Assembly recognizes Ouattara as Ivory Coast president
The U.N. General Assembly has recognized Alassane Ouattara as the winner of the Ivory Coast's
presidential election, giving a boost to his bid to unseat Laurent Gbagbo, who has
refused to step down.
Meanwhile, At a special conference on the Ivory Coast
held in Geneva, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kyung-wha
Kang told the council that the human rights situation in Cote d'Ivoire is worsening.
“Incitement
to hatred are not permissible under international law,” she said.
She told
the UN Human Rights Council it has been difficult to investigate allegations of abuse.
“The
deteriorating conditions and general insecurity have severely hampered economic and
social activities for many Ivoirians, especially the poorest,” she said.
