The world's governments approved a plan today to combat climate change, including
a new "Green Climate Fund" to help poor nations. The deal happened during the international
climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico.
Tim Gore, International Climate
Change Policy Advisor at Oxfam, says it is not all he wanted, but he is happy with
what was accomplished during the summit.
It isn’t every that is needed in the
fight against climate change, that is clear,” he said. “But it does offer some hope
that parties seriously are getting together, and taking real decisions. Some of which
are going to deliver for poor people.”
The deal does not include a commitment
to extend the Kyoto Protocol beyond 2012, when its first period expires, but it would
prevent a collapse of climate change negotiations and allow for some modest advances
on protecting the environment.
