Vatican to hold Mass for Bagdad’s victims

(November 17,2010) A Requiem Mass will be held in Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica on November 25th for the victims of the recent massacre in Bagdad, Iraq. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the press office of Vatican’s Secretary of State, informing all diplomatic missions accredited to the Holy See of the ceremony. It said the initiative was taken by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches on the request of the Syro-catholic rite community of Rome. Among the 52 victims of Bagdad’s massacre on 31st October were two priests. The gunmen took hostages gathered for Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Salvation Church, one of Bagdad’s largest and demanded the release of al Qaeda prisoners in Iraq and Egypt.
On hearing the news of the terrible attack, Pope Benedict XVI had condemned the violence saying it was all the more ferocious because it took place in a house of God. The Pope had also urged the international community to work for peace in the Middle East.
