The Archbishop of Canberra, Mark Coleridge attended Pope Benedict XVI's weekly
general audience in St Peter's Square on Wednesday morning. The Archbishop was there
leading a group of pilgrims from his nation, in Rome to attend the canonisation
on Sunday 17th October of Mother Mary MacKillop . Archbishop Coleridge says this
is an important moment for his nation as it marks "the canonisation of the first
ever Australian Saint..." The group is making a pilgrimage in the footsteps of
this woman who was in Rome in 1873 and 1874 seeking the Pope's approval of the rule
for her new Institute. And one of the things she did was meet twice with Pope Pius
IX, as we come today to meet Pope Benedict XVI "... .said Archbishop Coleridge who
believes this moment represents a new stage of maturity for the Australian Church
because while Mary Mackillop has long been recognised at home as a great gift given
to Australians by God , with her canonisation she becomes a gift to the Universal
Church . Listen :
