Discourse of Pope Benedict XVI to the New Ambassador of Chile to the Holy See
(October 07, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI expressed his deep appreciation to the unity
of the Chilean people in times of misery and hardship and their generous and supportive
response during the earthquake that affected several area of the country. The Pope
was addressing Mr Fernando Zegers Santa Cruz, new Ambassador of Chile to the Holy
See on Thursday, during the presentation of Letters of Credentials in Rome. The Pontiff
said that the Ambassador is starting his mission to the Holy See at the very year
when Chile celebrates the bicentennial of its independence, which gives the opportunity
to highlight once again the Church's role in the events outlined in their country’s
consolidation of national identity itself, deeply influenced by Catholic sentiment.
The country has been abundantly blessed with a great land, abounding in its fruits
of holiness, charity and human promotion, constant search for peace and coexistence.
Pope Benedict then recalled the last year's celebration of 25 anniversary of the signing
of the peace and friendship with Argentina that took place with the papal mediation.
This will be a shining example for future generations of the immense good that brings
peace and promotes moral and religious values. The Pope emphasised the fact that,
although church and state are separate and independent in their own field, they will
eventually develop a fair and respectful partnership to serve the personal and social
vocation of the people. The Pontiff assured that the Church in this nation works sincerely
and effectively, and want to continue doing so, in everything that contributes to
promoting the common good and orderly progress of the peaceful and harmonious coexistence
of all living in the beautiful land of Chile.
