On October 4th we celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Undoubtedly one
of the most beloved saints in the world, he preached a gospel of kindness, love and
respect for creation. During his lifetime, St. Francis collected many followers and
founded the Order of Mendicant Friars or Franciscans, all of whom take a vow of poverty,
chastity, love and obedience. He died in 1228, and his followers built a beautiful
church round him on the hill of his birthplace, Assisi, in the central Italian region
of Umbria. We pay tribute to “the little poor man of Assisi”, in this conversation
with Franciscan Friar Joseph Rozansky…
"...if you look and see the way that
Francis lived and responded to what was going on around him, I think that in many
ways he was very modern in the sense that he "read" what was going on around him..."
"after
800 years, the spirit of Francis is still very much alive, and he stood for certain
things (...) most people, not only catholics but non catholics too. And many people
just love him because of what they see him standing for... what he did, he lived that
what he believed and in the integrity of of his life he invited people to be like
what he was..."
