Nigerian Militant Arrested in Connection with Abuja Car Bombing
South African prosecutors say a Nigerian ex-militant leader was directly involved
in deadly bombings that struck Nigeria's capital during its independence celebrations. At
a court hearing in Johannesburg Monday for Henry Okah, prosecutors presented a charge
sheet accusing Okah of having participated in placing the bombs that killed at least
12 people in Nigeria's capital Abuja this past Friday. Okah himself made no comment,
and Okah's attorneys maintained their client's innocence, saying they would ask a
higher court for Okah's release on the grounds that his Saturday arrest in Johannesburg
was unlawful. Okah was once a leader in the Movement for the Emancipation of the
Niger Delta, which has claimed responsibility for the bombings - a claim Nigeria's
president, Goodluck Jonathan qualified in a statement Sunday evening, in which he
attributed direct responsibility to a foreign group.
