Journalists, editors and media experts from 89 countries around the world are taking
part in a congress here in the Vatican this week dedicated to the challenges facing
the Catholic press in our hi-tech world. Sponsored by the Pontifical Council for
Social Communications, the meeting, which opened on Monday, is a work-in-progress
exploring issues around how to be effectively present in this digital era, how to
report on controversy, whether to give voice to dissent and above all how to rediscover
the essential mission of the press to be of service to the Church and to the wider
