(RV - 19 septembrie 2010) Sâmbătă, în cursul după amiezii la sediul nunţiaturii apostolice din Londra, Papa a întâlnit un grup de persoane victime ale abuzurilor sexuale din partea unor membri ai clerului. Benedict al XVI-lea - se arată într-un comunicat al Sălii vaticane de presă - a fost impresionat ascultând povestirile victimelor şi a exprimat profundă durere şi ruşine pentru suferinţele lor şi ale familiilor lor. S-a rugat împreună cu victimele şi le-a asigurat că Biserica Catolică, în timp ce continuă să aplice măsuri eficiente pentru protecţia tinerilor, face tot posibilul pentru a verifica acuzaţiile, pentru a colabora cu autorităţile civile şi pentru a deferi justiţiei membrii clerului şi călugării acuzaţi de aceste grave crime. Dear Friends,

I am glad to have the opportunity to greet you, who represent the many professionals and volunteers responsible for child protection in church environments. The Church has a long tradition of caring for children from their earliest years through to adulthood, following the affectionate example of Christ, who blessed the children brought to him, and who taught his disciples that to such as these the Kingdom of Heaven belongs (cf. Mk 10:13-16).
Your work, carried out within the framework of the recommendations made in the first instance by the Nolan Report and subsequently by the Cumberlege Commission, has made a vital contribution to the promotion of safe environments for young people. It helps to ensure that the preventative measures put in place are effective, that they are maintained with vigilance, and that any allegations of abuse are dealt with swiftly and justly. On behalf of the many children you serve and their parents, let me thank you for the good work that you have done and continue to do in this field.
It is deplorable that, in such marked contrast to the Church’s long tradition of care for them, children have suffered abuse and mistreatment at the hands of some priests and religious. We have all become much more aware of the need to safeguard children, and you are an important part of the Church’s broad-ranging response to the problem. While there are never grounds for complacency, credit should be given where it is due: the efforts of the Church in this country and elsewhere, especially in the last ten years, to guarantee the safety of children and young people and to show them every respect as they grow to maturity, should be acknowledged. I pray that your generous service will help to reinforce an atmosphere of trust and renewed commitment to the welfare of children, who are such a precious gift from God.
May God prosper your work, and may he pour out his blessings upon all of you.

Cari amici,
sono lieto di avere l’opportunità di salutare voi che rappresentate i numerosi professionisti e volontari responsabili della protezione dei ragazzi negli ambienti ecclesiali. La Chiesa ha una lunga tradizione di cura dei ragazzi, dai primi anni di vita fino all’età adulta, seguendo l’esempio di affetto di Cristo che benediceva i fanciulli a lui portati e che insegnava ai suoi discepoli che a chi è come loro appartiene il Regno dei Cieli.
Il vostro lavoro, portato avanti sulla scorta delle raccomandazioni elaborate in una prima fase dal “Nola Report” e in seguito dalla Commissione “Cumberlege”, ha offerto un contributo vitale alla promozione di ambienti sicuri per la gioventù. Esso aiuta ad assicurare che le misure preventive messe in campo sono efficaci, che esse sono mantenute con attenzione, e che qualsiasi accusa di abuso è trattata con rapidità e giustizia. A nome dei molti ragazzi che voi servite e dei loro genitori, vorrei ringraziarvi per il buon lavoro che avete fatto e continuate a fare in questo settore.
È deplorevole che, in così marcato contrasto con la lunga tradizione della Chiesa di cura per i ragazzi, questi abbiano sofferto abusi e maltrattamenti ad opera di alcuni preti e religiosi. Siamo tutti diventati molto più consapevoli della necessità di proteggere i ragazzi e voi costituite una parte importante della vasta risposta della Chiesa al problema. Sebbene non vi siano mai motivi per compiacersi, occorre dare atto a ciò che è stato fatto: gli sforzi della Chiesa, in questo Paese e altrove, specialmente negli ultimi dieci anni per garantire la sicurezza dei fanciulli e dei giovani e per mostrare loro ogni rispetto durante la loro crescita verso la maturità, devono essere riconosciuti. Prego che il vostro generoso servizio aiuti a rafforzare un’atmosfera di fiducia e di rinnovato impegno per il benessere dei ragazzi, che sono un così prezioso dono di Dio.
