(July 28, 2010) The Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh along with over 1000 people
has launched its green campaign globally to check environmental pollution and global
warming. “Shading the mother earth campaign” had already become a huge success in
the state after it was launched in July 29, 2009 in 50 Catholic schools. The director
of the campaign Father Anand Muttungal inaugurated the campaign globally by planting
a sapling in the campus of St Mary Higher Secondary School, Bhopal. “It is our duty
to promote it for the global community which is working hard to check the menace of
global warming. “We are sending complete details of the project through emails to
every foreign embassy in the country, global Non-government organisations (NGOs),
and other social groups working to promote a clean environment and check environmental
pollutions,” he said. The campaign envisages a student to plant and nurture a sapling
for at least three years. Successful students will be awarded certain marks in the
practical examination of environmental study, Father Muttungal said. It is a voluntary
and no student will be forced to participate in it with the teachers monitoring the
implementation. The campaign has already been included in the school curriculum in
the country, the priest said. The Church schools, she said, are expected to plant
thousands of saplings in the state this year.
