Industrialisation Won’t Help Rural Poor, says IFAD Director
(28 Jun 10 – RV) Although pictures of beggars and street children in city slums dominate
many news reports about poverty, nearly 75% of the world’s poorest live in rural areas.
In
1977, the United Nations established The International Fund for Agricultural Development,
or IFAD, to help eradicate rural poverty.
Over the past few decades, many countries
have tried to end rural poverty with a programme of industrialization.
The
President of IFAD Kanayo Nwanze says this is the wrong approach, and these countries
should become wealthy by developing their agricultural capabilities. Hear more:
