Pope Benedict XVI to Ordain 14 Deacons as Priests on Sunday


(June 19, 2010) Pope Benedict is ordaining 14 deacons as Priests in Rome on Sunday 20th of June during the 9.30 am mass. This ceremony will take place at St Peter’s Basilica, Rome. Ten of the deacons are from the Roman Pontifical Roman Major Seminary. 29 year old Rajesh Ruzar Fernandes from Yellapur, Karnataka, India is the youngest member of the group to be ordained. Of the 14 deacons to be ordained, 13 of them are incardinated to the Diocese of Rome and the 14th member, Alexander Pixner, belongs to the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Order is a religious order founded in 1190 during the siege of Acre, when a hospital brotherhood was established to care for the many sick German crusaders. Its members are also known as the Teutonic Knights, since they also served as a crusading military order during the middle ages. John Franco born in 1961 is the oldest deacon to receive the sacrament from the Holy Father.
