Discourse of Pope Benedict XVI to the Bishops of Brazil at the Ad Limina Visit
(June 19, 2010) As guides for Christian people, the Bishops ought to promote the
participation of all the faithful in the Church's, ruling with a heart of humble servant
and affectionate pastor, in view of the glory of God and the salvation of souls, said
Pope Benedict XVI. He was addressing the Bishops of the Eastern Region of Brazil,
on Saturday, 19th of June during the Ad Limina visit. The visit ad Limina
means, the obligation of the incumbent Bishop visiting, at stated times, the "thresholds
of the Apostles", Sts. Peter and Paul, and of presenting themselves before the pope
to give an account of the state of their dioceses. The Pope said that as teachers
and doctors of the faith, they have a mission to teach courageously, the truth that
one must believe and live, and present it in an authentic manner to the people. The
Pontiff told them that as administrators of the supreme priesthood, they will find
that the liturgy is truly an epiphany of mystery, which is an expression of the genuine
nature of the Church that actively worships God through Christ in the Holy Spirit.
Hence the most compelling and important responsibility is the celebration of the Eucharist,
especially on Sunday with the people of God, he said. Further, by virtue of their
office of governing, the Bishop is also called the judge and discipline the life of
the people of God entrusted to their pastoral care, through laws, guidelines and suggestions,
as provided in the discipline of the Church, said the Holy Father. However, to be
pastorally helpful, the Bishop should have the moral credibility which stems from
their holiness of life. He called on them to be shaped inwardly by the Holy Spirit,
celebrating the sacraments, filled with faith and also welcome those in need with
faith and love, said the Holy Father.
