Lahore Archdiocese celebrates the missionary work of Belgian Capuchins
(June 09,2010) In Pakistan, the Archdiocese of Lahore celebrated the missionary
work of Belgian Capuchins, who worked hard for the last 120 years to keep the Church
alive. Archbishop Lawerence John Saldanha of Lahore said “We are grateful to the
services of the Belgian Capuchins, who toiled in this land and worked very hard to
establish the church in the Punjab over a period of 120 years, starting in 1886,”
The prelate made the remarks at a gathering of 35 priests and religious from different
congregations, who came together to celebrate at St. Mary’s Friary in Gulberg city.
He noted that even before the Italians and the Dutch, the Belgian Capuchins spearheaded
the establishment of the local Church. Among the missionaries who worked in the
diocese, Archbishop Saldanha particularly thanked Fr Daniel Suply, who worked
for more than 30 years to train seminarians and nuns.”
