Obama Announces New Steps to Deal with Aftermath of Oil Spill
(28 May 10 - RV) As BP laboured for a second day yesterday to choke off the leak at
the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, new government estimates showed the disaster has
easily eclipsed the Exxon Valdez as the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.
BP
chief operating officer Doug Suttles said it's too early to judge the success of the
'top kill' operation.
US President Barack Obama announced a series of new
steps to deal with the aftermath of the spill, including continuing a moratorium on
drilling permits for six months. Obama made the announcements during a press conference
yesterday in which he attempted to convey that his administration is in control of
the repair and relief efforts in the Gulf, after critics began to claim that the administration
had been slow to act and had left BP in charge of plugging the leak.
