UN deplores deadly bombings in Moscow’s subway system
(March 30, 2010) United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Security Council
members, have strongly condemned Monday morning’s twin suicide bombings in the Moscow
subw ay system that have killed dozens of people and injured scores more. Media reports
say at least 38 people died as a result of the bombings, which occurred at separate
metro stations within 40 minutes of each other during the morning rush hour. In
a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban voiced confidence that the Russian authorities
will bring to justice the perpetrators of this drastic terrorist attack. The UN Secretary-General
extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Government
and people of the Russian Federation. He also wished the many injured a swift recovery.
The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms
and manifestations, constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace
and security. It said in a press statement that any acts of terrorism are criminal
and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation. Council members also reiterated
their determination to combat all forms of terrorism.
