Brazil bishops launch campaign to distribute 1 million Bibles to poor

(March 23, 2010) The bishops of Brazil have launched a campaign to distribute 1 million Bibles to the country's poorest Catholic families. Each family will receive a kit containing a Bible, a Children's Bible, a copy of the catechism book "I Believe, and a booklet to guide the reader through the Bible. Sonia Minder, campaign coordinator, explained that the distribution will focus first in the Amazon and the northeast regions of the country, where the concentration of poor people is highest. Our target is to hand out the kits to those, who are unable to afford to buy the book," she said. "We are also focusing on those people and families, who have strayed from our religion." Parishes and community groups will determine who receives the kits. Their requests will be funnelled through local diocesan offices, which will forward them to the bishops' conference. The church is relying on private donations and partnerships with advertising agencies and transportation companies to promote and deliver the kits. According to Minder, the campaign will last as long as requests for kits are received. "It may last throughout this year, or may go into next year. We have no determined schedule," she said and added that if demand surpasses the 1 million mark the bishops' conference will continue the distribution until the demand is met.
