Myanmar's High Court Rejects Suu Kyi's Appeal for Freedom
(RV - 26 Feb 10) The highest court in military-ruled Myanmar dismissed opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi's latest bid for freedom today, turning down an appeal to
end 14 years of house arrest. The Supreme Court's decision casts further doubt
on the legitimacy of this year's election, which has been widely derided as an attempt
by the junta to make the country appear democratic, with the military pulling the
strings behind a civilian-fronted government. Executive Director at Burma Campaign
UK, Anna Roberts, says that junta is trying to keep Suu Kyi from stirring up opposition
before the elections.
