Address by Pope Benedict XVI to the Italian Civil Aviation
(February 20, 2010) “The tasks entrusted to you are truly remarkable! You are called
to regulate and control air traffic and provide efficient national transport system,
in compliance with international commitments of the country, to ensure that user and
businesses to flight safety, protection of rights, the quality of services in airports
and fair competition in the environment,” said Pope Benedict XVI. He was addressing
the members of the Italian Civil Aviation on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Paul
VI Hall in Rome. The Italian Civil Aviation Authority was established on 25th July
1997 by Legislative Decree as the National Authority committed to oversee the technical
regulation, the surveillance and the control in the civil aviation field. The Pope
said that in this world of multiple commitments it is necessary to preserve and enhance
the person in his integrity. He called on them never to lose sight of the importance
of the individual personal attention to the needs of peoples, but become more effective
in service, keeping in mind proper economic management and at the same time showing
true efficiency and authentic quality. The Holy Father said that today's airport is
increasingly becoming a meeting place of humanity, where one encounters people of
various nationalities, cultures and religions, travelling for business, vacations,
employment and even evangelisation. He said that their job is discreet and little
known but does not escape in the eyes of God. The Pontiff then asked them to remain
in the presence of the Blessed Virgin of Loreto, Patron of all Aviation, as granted
by Pope Benedict XV in 1920, to be the instruments of good tidings.
