30 religious communities suffered losses in Haiti’s earthquake


( Feb.03.2010): The Haitian Conference of Religious has drafted a report on the losses suffered by religious communities during the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. The report said the Little Sisters of St. Teresa sustained the greatest losses: four sisters, seven teachers, and 60 students were killed, and five houses and two schools associated with the community were destroyed. The nation of 8.8 million is 80% Catholic. According to recent Vatican statistics, the Church in Haiti has 306 religious priests, 332 religious brothers, and 1,851 sisters.
