Cardinal Cahal Brendan Daly of Ireland Passes Away
(January 02, 2010) Irish Cardinal Cahal Brendan Daly of Ireland passed away on Thursday,
31st of December 2009. He was 92. Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh
and Primate of All-Ireland, in a statement said that Cardinal Cahal Daly died peacefully
on the evening of 31st in the presence of family and friends at the City Hospital
in Belfast, after a short illness. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, 5th
of January in Armagh. His death leaves the College of Cardinals with 183 members,
112 of whom are under age 79 and therefore eligible to vote in a conclave. There
are two Irish cardinals: Cardinal Sean Baptist Brady and Cardinal Desmond Connell.
Cardinal Cahal B Daly was born in Loughguile, on 1st of October 1917.
He was educated at St Patrick's National School in Loughguile, and then at Queen's
University in Belfast. He entered St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and was ordained
priest on 22 June 1941. Later he obtained a doctorate in divinity from the same college.
He was a peritus, or theological expert, at the Second Vatican Council. Cardinal Daly
was ordained Bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnois in 1967 and was subsequently consecrated
as Bishop of Down and Connor in 1982. He was consecrated as Archbishop of Armagh and
Primate of All Ireland on 16 December 1990 and served until his retirement, at the
age of 79. Upon his retirement Cardinal Daly returned to his study of theology and
philosophy. He wrote a series of books on violence and the search for peace in Northern
Ireland. He was known as a man of intellect, distinguished scholar, deep spiritual
person and an agent of peace particularly in the troubled Ireland.
