(Nov.24, 2009): “Widows Day” was celebrated in southern India’s Karnataka State
by the Catholic Association of South Kanara on Sunday . During its 95th
annual meeting Nov.22, the Association said "Widows' Day" was in honour of real
heroines, who have sacrificed their lives to bring up their children. The President
of the lay association, Michael Saldanha, a retired judge of the Karnataka High Court,
said the idea came, while his group was documenting the history of Catholic families
in Mangalore. He noted that there were some 100 women and a few men, who opted to
remain single to raise their children after their spouses' death. To some 77 widows,
who attended the event, Saldanha presented each with a citation, a book on heroic
women and a flower. Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza of Mangalore told the meeting that
widows have a prominent place in the Bible and Jesus is close to them. Several awardees
told UCA News that their Catholic faith has sustained them in their loneliness and
struggles.
