(16 Nov 09 - RV) The worldwide Jesuit community is honouring the legacy of six Jesuit
priests who were assassinated in El Salvador on this day in 1989. Their housekeeper
and her teenage daughter were also killed. The eight victims including Father Ignacio
Ellacuría were shot by Salvadoran soldiers in the grounds of the University of Central
America where they lived and worked. Their massacre at the height of El Salvador’s
civil war, sparked an international outcry. Canadian Jesuit, Fr Michael Czerny
knew all the men and in the wake of their deaths, chose to go to the capital San Salvador
just a few days later to continue their work. Fr Michael shared with us his memories
of that November night two decades ago …
