Church remembers 1st death anniversary of Fr Bernard Digal killed in anti-Christian
riots in Orissa.
(Oct.28,2009): The Catholic Church of India marked on Tuesday the first death anniversary
of Fr. Bernard Digal, one of the first victims of anti-Christian riots of August
2008 in eastern India’s Orissa State. The 48-year-old priest died Oct. 28 at St. Thomas
Hospital in Chennai after two months of slow agony for the serious injuries sustained
during the attack by Hindu fundamentalists.in Khandhamal. His murderers have not
yet been arrested and the family never received any compensation. The Indian Church
remembered the exact day of his death with a Mass at the church of Saint Vincent
in Bhubaneshwar. Archbishop Raphael Cheenath of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar celebrated the
memorial mass. According to reports the extremists beat the priest for hours
with crowbars, lathis, [spears] and wooden boards, leaving him completely naked. There
was not a single part of Fr.Bernard’s body that was not beaten."
