(17 Oct 09 - RV) There is a real prospect for peace in eastern Congo after years
of conflict. Those were the words of a senior U.N. official yesterday. Earlier
this week, a coalition of 84 humanitarian groups issued a report saying more than
1,000 civilians had been killed and nearly 900,000 displaced in eastern Congo by fighting
between rebels and Congolese forces since January. Dr Meni Nicolai is the spokesperson
for Medecins Sans Frontieres, one of the few aid organizations operating in the region.
