Pope announces theme for World Communications Day 2010
(Sept.29,2009): The theme chosen by Pope Benedict XVI for the 44th
World Communications Day next year is “The priest and pastoral ministry in the
digital world – New Media in the service of the word.” The theme was released Tuesday
on the Feast of Archangel Gabriel - the Patron of Telecommunications. The message
for World Communication Day 2010, invites especially priests, in this Year dedicated
to priests to consider the new media as a powerful resource for their ministry.
Addressing the challenges arising from the new digital culture, the Pope’s message
says if the new media are well understood and valued properly, they can offer all
priests and pastoral workers, a wealth of data and content that were previously
difficult to access and facilitate forms of collaboration and growth that were unthinkable
in the past. If used well, with the help of experts in technology and culture, new
media may well become for priests and all pastoral workers a valid and effective
tool of evangelisation, said the Pope’s message for the 44th World Communications
Day.
