Pope Benedict XVI reflects on the summary of the film "Saint Augustine"
(September3, 2009) “With all the problems, sorrows, failures that surround us it
will eventually be the truth that will sustain and will remain firmly placed in man,”
said Pope Benedict XVI. He said this after viewing a film on St Augustine, at his
summer residence at Castel Gandolfo on Wednesday, 2nd of September. St
Augustine, a fifth century saint, was a philosopher, theologian and one of the most
important figures in the development of Western Christianity. The Pope had given his
reflection on St Augustine along with his mother St Monica during his Angelus Message
on Sunday, explaining his conversion through his mother’s tears. The Pontiff thanked
the Bavarian Television along with Lux Vide and Rai for the grand presentation of
the life of St. Augustine. This film he said was indeed a spiritual journey bringing
those many centuries close to us, because the human nature is always the same and
the ultimate goal is the truth. Pope Benedict reflected to say that outwardly, the
life of St. Augustine seems to end tragically. The world in which he lived is over,
is destroyed. But as has been said, his message remained. Even in the changing world
this message remains because it is the truth and guidance to charity, which is our
common destination. Then the Pope thanked all saying that he hoped that many would
profit by this human drama founded on truth and love.
