Former head of Vatican Radio, Fr. Pasquale Borgomeo passes away
(July 3, 2009) Former director general of Vatican Radio, Jesuit priest Fr. Pasquale
Borgomeo has passed away. He died Thursday afternoon in Rome at the age of 76 after
a long illness. Fr. Borgomeo was born in Naples, Italy, in 1933. A Jesuit for 60
years, Fr. Borgomeo served Vatican Radio for 35 years, first as head of the central
editorial board, then as director of programmes and finally as director general.
He left Vatican Radio on Nov. 5th, 2005. He was also engaged with the
union of Italian Catholic Journalists. Gifted with a brilliant intellect, Fr. Borgomeo
obtained a doctoral degree in patristic theology, specializing in St. Augustine, from
the famed Paris university of Sorbonne. Remembered as an open and cordial man he
exhibited great communicative skills, especially with his command over several languages,
including English. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at Rome’s Holy Spirit
Church, next to the Jesuit headquarters in Rome, the community to which he belonged.
