Report Highlights Effect of Climate Change on Swiss Glaciers
(23 June 09 - RV) A new study has found that Switzerland's glaciers shrank by 12 percent
over the past decade, melting at their fastest rate due to rising temperatures and
lighter snowfalls. The findings published by the Swiss university ETH says that this
shrinkage is a trend that has been continuing since the end of the 1980s. Researchers
are predicting that the temperatures in the Swiss Alps will rise by 1.8 degrees Celsius
in winter and by 2.7 degrees Celsius in the summer by 2050. We spoke with Swiss
University ETH researcher Daniel Farinotti, who says there is no doubt this is part
of a global trend….
