Pakistanis Prepare for a New Exodus from War-Torn Region
(22 June 09-RV) Fighting in Pakistani tribal areas bordering Afghanistan intensified
today, with militants attacking three security force bases and military jets responding
with airstrikes that killed at least 21 people. U.N. officials today said about 40,000
Pakistanis are on the move ahead of a new government offensive begins in the Taliban
stronghold of South Waziristan. The Spokesperson for the UN’s World Food Programme
in Pakistan, Amjad Jamal, says the UN agencies are preparing for this new exodus.
