Discourse of Pope Benedict XVI to the Italian Bishop’s Conference
(May 28, 2009) “Your assembly visibly expresses and promotes that communion in which
the Church lives, and that takes place in the harmony of the pastoral initiatives
and action which I have seen steadily growing and strengthening,” said Pope Benedict
XVI. He was speaking to the Italian Conference of Bishops on Thursday 28th
of May in Rome. The central theme of the meeting - the urgent task of education -
which requires grounding in the Word of God and spiritual discernment, the cultural
and social projects, the witness of unity and purpose, he added. He expressed his
appreciation of their pastoral leadership, generous service of many priests and deacons,
religious and lay faithful. Reflecting on the Church's journey in Italy after the
Council, placing its focus on the task of education, the Holy Father called on them
to listen, reflect and discuss the need to deal with a kind of educational program
that arises from a coherent and complete vision of Jesus Christ. The Conference
engaged in a structured animation of youth, is an invitation said the Pope, to check
the current progress of education and undertake new projects for a range of recipients,
one for the younger generation, which is a significant responsibility for the education.
The task to form genuine Christians along with responsible and mature men and women,
is at the heart of the educational project, said the Pontiff. A true teacher in the
first place knows his person and authority to join in the task of educating people.
Hence Peter addresses to say that all have to be examples to the Flock and Paul invites
all to imitate him as he imitates Christ. Touching the financial and economic crises
the Pope called on their commitment to the promotion of a widespread attitude in favour
of life in every aspect and moment, with particular attention to those marked by conditions
of great fragility and instability.
