(May 21,2009): The Church in Italy has expressed its nearness to the suffering people
of Sri Lanka’s long drawn out ethnic conflict and sent a large donation to help
meet the urgent needs of the victims. Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the Government
of Sri Lanka officially declared that its military operation against the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had ended. To meet the most urgent and essential
needs of the people hit by the Sri Lankan conflict, the President of the Italian Bishops
Conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco on Tuesday, sent a donation of one million euro.
He also called on ecclesial communities to pray for the victims and support the initiatives
of solidarity promoted by CARITAS Italy.
